Dr. Amy Barrios
Texas A&M University- San Antonio, USA
Topic: Survival of the Fittest: Navigating Expectations of Teaching in today’s Classrooms
Dr. Amy Barrios joins the Department of Curriculum and Instruction this fall as Associate Professor. Most recently residing in the DC area, Amy was a faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia, where she served as Division Chair of Education, Health, and Social Work. Prior to working at UDC, Amy served as faculty at Angelo State University in San Angelo, where she led secondary and graduate certification programs. She has also taught for Valdosta State University, the George Washington University and Johns Hopkins’ School of Education, where she worked to support new teachers in DC schools within their first five years of teaching.
Over the course of her career in education, Amy has served as an English teacher, instructional coach, administrator, and faculty member. She began her education career as a high school English teacher in her hometown of Ashburn, Georgia. Amy’s leadership in the field of education earned her a national Emerging Leader in Education award through Phi Delta Kappa, and she recently served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Teacher Educators. Dr. Barrios has more than 17 years of experience in education, where she has taught in rural, urban, face to face, online, and hybrid formats, and has served learners in traditional, non-traditional, and community college settings.
Amy is certified as a teacher and administrator in more than a dozen areas and is passionate about ensuring teachers are prepared to address the diverse needs of today’s student population. Her research interests include Literacy strategies, classroom diversity, curriculum development, teacher quality and preparation, and culturally relevant learning.

James Johnson-Perkins is an educator and artist, whom is currently the Art and Design Modules Convener and the Academic Leader for Humanities and Social Sciences, for the Centre for English Languages Education at The University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China. He was the Head of the BA Fine Art course at the Scientific College of Art and Design, Muscat, Oman and he also worked at one of Russia’s principle art colleges: The British Higher School of Art and Design. In September 2019 he became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK.
